Identify Your Configuration: POP or IMAP
This page explains how to identify your current email client configuration (either POP or IMAP protocol) on a Windows or Mac computer.
Windows 7/8/10
Microsoft Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016
- Click on Info and then Account Settings.
- Identify whether your Smarsh Hosted Email Account Type is configured as IMAP/SMTP or POP/SMTP.
Note: Once you have identified your specific configuration (POP/IMAP), please return to the previous page and continue your post-upgrade configuration.
Microsoft Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010
- In Outlook, click on your mailbox and select Account Properties, followed by Account Settings.
- Identify whether your Smarsh Hosted Email Account Type is configured as IMAP/SMTP or POP/SMTP.
Note: Once you have identified your specific configuration (POP/IMAP), please return to the previous page and continue your post-upgrade configuration.
Mac OS X
Microsoft Outlook 2016
- In Outlook, click on Tools then select Accounts.
- Select your email account in the left-hand navigation bar.
- Identify whether your Smarsh Hosted Email account is configured as IMAP or POP via the text under the name of the Account.
Note: Once you have identified your specific configuration (POP/IMAP), please return to the previous page and continue your post-upgrade configuration.
Microsoft Outlook 2011
- In Outlook, click on Tools then select Accounts.
- Double click on your email account in the left-hand navigation bar.
- Identify whether your Smarsh Hosted Email account Type is set to POP or IMAP.

Apple Mail (OS X 10.6+)
- To identify the current server settings, click on Mail and select Preferences.
- Select the Accounts Select your Smarsh Hosted Email account. Under Account information identify the Account Type as IMAP or POP.
